The Community Foundation of West Alabama awarded grants to six area nonprofit groups recently. These grants were funded by the Pelham D. and Anna Brown Endowment Fund and the Community Endowment Fund within the CFWA. The CFWA awards grants twice yearly based on an application process and has provided in excess of $120,000 support to local agencies. The Community Foundation of West Alabama is a charitable organization which supports various cultural, health, social and educational programs in Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Pickens, Sumter, and Tuscaloosa counties. In its 13 year existence, the CFWA has given over $10 million to charitable causes.

The recipients of the 2013 Spring grants are:

  • Arts & Autism ($800) to help fund an out-of-state trip for the summer campers.  This trip is to take them to the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, GA

  • Catholic Social Services ($1,000) to cover expenses such as subsidized childcare, educational-related expenses (GED test fees, licensure exam fees, educational supplies, etc.), and transportation expenses.

  • Family Counseling Services ($1,500) to provide counseling sessions for parents and/or at-risk students in the Tuscaloosa area.  This is a joint project between Family Counseling Services, Tuscaloosa County & City schools.  The funding is used to provide counseling sessions for the parents and/or students.

  • Tuscaloosa’s One Place ($1,500) to provide a five-week summer camp for children ages 5 – 10.  This camp is a partnership with the Northport Housing Authority and will accommodate25 – 30 children.  Funds will be used for a variety of need including school supplies for those completing the program.

  • Project Horseshoe Farm ($600) to help expand the Clubhouse day program for many elderly and mentally disabled members and expand the afterschool tutoring, mentoring and activities programs for children in the community.

  • Sight Savers of America KidCheck ($600) to help provide medical screenings for seven Bibb County schools K – 12th.
