The Hurricane Katrina Funds

In an effort to support Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and local displaced persons, the Community Foundation of West Alabama established two Hurricane Katrina Funds in September of 2005.

Hurricane Katrina Recovery Fund The donations given to this fund will be directed toward areas in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana according to the wishes of the donors. All contributions are processed locally, without administration fees, and will be sent by the Community Foundation to the affected areas.

The Board of Directors will strive to discover and direct funds toward the pressing needs of the affected areas, possibly through other Community Foundations. Community Foundations will be critical in helping to maintain a flow of donations in the long period of recovery to come in these areas. ( Anne teaches kindergarten at Verner Elementary and has the pleasure of teaching Tate, who was relocated to Tuscaloosa after his family lost everything they owned after Hurricane Katrina.)

Hurricane Katrina Displaced Residents Fund –
This fund was also established in September 2005 to be used in support of displaced persons from Hurricane Katrina in the West Alabama area. Local individuals and businesses contributed to this fund, including McAbee Construction and their employees.The Board of Directors of the Community Foundation discovered that there was a need for textbooks for new students in the city and county schools of Tuscaloosa. Given the limited budgets in public schools, it is often difficult for schools to immediately respond to unexpected needs.

One local elementary school received twenty new students in a short period of time following Hurricane Katrina, while numerous others received from one to seventeen new students. These schools have done an admirable job in helping to ease the transition of these young students who have suffered great hardship and loss. The Community Foundation of West Alabama, through the generosity of donors to this fund, was pleased to donate $40 for each new student in the Tuscaloosa City and County elementary schools to be used for textbooks and supplies.
